Iridescence: a vigil (2022)

This poetic story was inspired by mud larking on the River Thames followed by stumbling upon on Crossbones nearby- an old burial grounds that was once the final resting place of medieval sex workers (‘Winchester Geese’) licensed (by the Bishop of Winchester) to work outside the law of the city of London.

I performed it as spoken word at an art show in a church in east London where I noticed memorials to men who died in the world wars. I thought this male theme could provide an interesting contrast to intwine into the story.

One Saturday afternoon, I walked around Ridley Road market in east London and this poem was my response to its sights and sounds.
